Cop Circles
June 27, 2007 on 2:37 pm | In Dogma meets Karma |
These crop circles were created on the evening of June 22, 2007 in a cornfield near the village of Dussen, in the south of the Netherlands. Four police cars “chased” a man high on cocaine through a corn field before he ran into a ditch.
All four police cars were reported to be destroyed. Yet this YouTube clip of a Dutch news video shows that the field was perhaps 2′ tall and the vehicles were driving at low speeds. Apparently none of the police vehicles were as … robust as American police cars.
In fact, that was perhaps the silliest police chase I’ve seen. No sirens, no adrenaline, no real commentary, just birds chirping in the shrubbery while some nut lays waste to a field. He didn’t even do donuts.
More details come from an AP reporter, commenting in a USAToday blog:

For the story poster:
Greetings. I’m an AP reporter in Amsterdam. It’s true we didn’t file a story to go with this, but the photo caption contained the basic information. It happened Friday in Dussen, a rural area near the city of Tilburg.
Police received reports of a man driving erratically. When they tracked him down, he was driving his father’s Mercedes; an officer who approached the car fell over when the guy suddenly gave it gas, and the policeman just barely pulled his legs away in time to avoid being run over. Eventually it took a couple of loaned 4×4’s and a helicopter to capture the driver: he drove into a drainage ditch.
The driver _ his name was not released _ confessed he was high on cocaine, and a small amount was found in his car.
His license was revoked on the spot, and he’s also going to face destruction of property charges.Anything else you wanted to know?
Yeah, what does the farmer think about all this?

i read that the farmer was actually overjoyed that his field was so heavily damaged, because he needed money very badly and this crop was his last hope of surviving the winter.
And so it was an exciting day for everybody.

Any word on why the tracks appear to have been made from one vehicle? That is, one would expect some evidence that more than one vehicle was moving along any one route at any given time (i.e., cop cars following behind the fugitive). Did the authorities manage to follow exactly in the futitive’s tracks? If so, why did their cars get so beaten up?
The result is actually kind of cooler than standard “crop circles”. I wonder if the track can tell anything about the cocaine-driven mind. In action I bet this was better than the Keystone Cops!
If someone can find the actual route of the vehicle(s) in that photo, I will be amazed.

Hi M,
From what I could see in the Dutch video, it looks like the chase was at a low speed and that cars were following each other.
Doug reminded me that even short cornstalks are very thick and could tear up the underside of a car that isn’t outfitted for off-roading.
Thanks for coming by!

(PS. ref. the effect of cocaine on the mind: do you notice an Anarchy symbol (A in a circle) in the mud near the top of the field?)
